The basics

Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) is a therapeutic approach that works with emotional memory and identity. It was developed by Andrew T. Austin and is now practiced by a growing number of certified practitioners worldwide.

In simple terms: IEMT uses guided eye movements to help the brain process and reduce the emotional charge attached to difficult memories, recurring emotional states, and fixed negative beliefs about yourself.
It's not EMDR, though people sometimes confuse the two. It's its own distinct approach with its own methodology, and it tends to work differently from most things people have tried before.

What happens in an IEMT session?

You sit comfortably and focus on a feeling, memory, or belief you want to work with. You don't need to describe it in detail or explain its history. You simply give it a label and a number  how intense does it feel right now, on a scale of one to ten).

From there, your practitioner guides your eyes through specific movement patterns while you hold the feeling in mind. As this happens, the emotional intensity around it typically begins to reduce.

Most people find the process straightforward, and many are surprised by how quickly a shift happens.

Why eye movements?

Moving your eyes in specific ways appears to interact with the part of the brain responsible for storing memories and their associated emotions. When the brain is engaged in this way while holding an emotional memory, it seems to create an opportunity for that memory to be processed differently , reducing its charge without requiring you to relive it or analyse it.

The exact mechanism is still being researched, but the results are consistent enough that IEMT is used by therapists, coaches, and practitioners across a wide range of settings.

What does IEMT actually change?

IEMT works across three areas:

Emotional patterns: recurring states like anxiety, anger, guilt, shame, or sadness that appear automatically and feel unwanted. As the emotional charge reduces, these states tend to become less frequent, less intense, or both.

Emotional memories: difficult or overwhelming experiences that still feel present, even when you know they're in the past. After IEMT, clients often describe the memory as something that happened rather than something that is still happening.

Identity imprints : the fixed ideas we hold about ourselves, often formed through repeated experience: I'm an anxious person. I don't cope well under pressure. I'll never get over this. As the emotional patterns underneath these beliefs soften, the identity tends to shift naturally.

IEMT is commonly used for:

  • Anxiety: generalized, social, situational, performance-related

  • Recurring emotions: anger, guilt, shame, frustration, sadness
  • Trauma responses and difficult memories
  • Low confidence and self-esteem
  • Fixed negative beliefs about yourself
  • Fear: including fear after accidents, falls, or frightening events

  • Emotional reactions that feel out of proportion or out of control
  • Identity: how you see yourself and how you relate to others

Is IEMT right for me?
IEMT tends to work particularly well for people who:
  • Have a good understanding of their issues but the feeling hasn't shifted
  • Want to work without having to tell their whole story
  • Are looking for something faster and more focused than long-term talk therapy
  • Feel like they keep reacting in ways they can't explain or control
It's not the right fit for everyone, and a good practitioner will tell you honestly if something else might serve you better.
